We learned about this interesting garden tool from a gardening youtube channel we watch called HortTube with Jim Putnam. You can go to this site, https://www.greencastonline.com/tools/soil-temperature and put in your location and you receive information about your current soil temperature and how it has increased over the past few weeks and then a summary statement of the current soil temperature for your area. On the far right hand side of the page you can click and find a similar page for soil moisture.
Kind of nerdy, I know, but now I can see why it would not be safe to plant tender plants in Madison, Wisconsin as our soil temperature is only 47 F., despite the warmer spring we have experienced this year and I learned that our soil moisture has increased a lot with recent precipitation.
Michael and I thought it would be fascinating to pair soil temperature with the Ruby-throat migration map and see how warming soil pairs with migrating Ruby-throated hummingbirds!
In past years, I tried planting salvias in April and quickly learned that our soil temperature was still not high enough then, as most of them died. Live and learn!!
Thank you for looking at this fascinating tool!!
